The Cabins

Pinegri-la was once the site of an isolated ranger station. The old ranger house is now filled with bunk beds, but the surrounding land is still protected within the Shasta-Trinity wilderness area. Owners Beth and John, who has a background in social work, began creating a camp for urban youth. Now, it has become a retreat for family reunions and the occasional offbeat wedding.

The cabins have great personality and style. They're definitely not just "rustic" boxes with dusty walls, musty beds and cold drafts. Very comfortable and impeccably clean, each has its own unique personality. Thy was taken by their cute kitchens, and Bryan was impressed with the ingenious design and engineering of their water-saving toilets. An outdoor shower where the trees tower overhead, local crafts decorating the cabins, and a natural, spring-fed ice house are just a few of the other features that we loved about Pinegri-la.

The beds already have flannel sheets and comforters, so you won't need to worry about bedding. Some towels will be provided, but those of you who are coming up from SF might consider bringing your own favorite bath towel. The kitchens are fully outfitted with major appliances and coffee makers, and the water at the camp is potable.

City slickers need not fear that they'll be stranded without hot showers, TV, or email. However, because we will be surrounded by mountains, you might want to start weaning yourself of cell phone access during the drive up.

Be prepared for a slumber party atmosphere in the sleeping lofts and bunkhouses.  Although some of the cabins have private nooks, for the most part you will be sharing a space with friends old and new. The Fishing Cabin sleeps 9, the Bear Cabin sleeps 6, and the Bird Cabin sleeps 11. The Red Chalet Annex and the old Ranger Station House together add another 21.

If you prefer, you can sleep out under the nearly-full moon. Let us know if you'd like to pitch a tent in one of the nearby meadows. We will be enjoying our lovely honeymoon suite -- an open-air pavilion perched further up the mountain where we'll keep each other warm as the stars sweep the sky.
